Diese Woche: Nachrichten aus der EU: Deutschland hat gewählt; das Klima fehlte als Wahlkampfthema fast ganz und Wahlsiegerin CDU/CSU macht gegen Umweltverbände ein bisschen auf Trump. Frankreich lässt die Energiewende dümpeln. Und die EU tritt bei ihrer Klimapolitik auf die Bremse.
Auch diese Woche viele schlechte Nachrichten von der Horrorshow aus Washington. Das Vorbild Trump beflügelt Anti-Umweltpolitik weltweit und das spürt auch der Weltklimarat IPCC, der in Hangzhou zu seinem 62. Plenartreffen zusammenkommt. Immerhin und gegen Trumps Trend: Erstmals arbeiten an einem IPCC-Bericht mehr Frauen als Männer mit.
Aber nicht nur Trumps Truppe macht Antiklimapolitik in den USA: Unternehmen verklagen Anti-Pipeline-Widerstandskämpfer:innen auf horrende Summen. Auch Greenpeace gehört zu den Angegriffenen.
Ausserdem gibt es Nachrichten über Negativemissionen. Darunter versteht man meist das Abscheiden von CO2 aus der Atmosphäre. Inwieweit kann man aber auch Methan entfernen? Und eine neue Studie zeigt, wie die Gletscher weltweit immer schneller schmelzen.
Und schliesslich fragte ein Forschungsprojekt in Deutschland, warum die Öffentlichkeit so hartnäckig ausblendet, dass wir uns bereits mitten im Klimakollaps befinden – und was die Chancen einer aufrichtigen Kommunikation zum Kollaps wären. Und ein Vordenker der Letzten Generation ist regelrecht euphorisch – die gewaltfreie, demokratische Revolution komme!

It was the year 1992 when the assembled heads of state heralded the era of climate negotiations in Rio de Janeiro. At that time, after a short stint in theoretical physics, I had started as a climate scientist at the Max Planck Institute in Hamburg, Germany. After 27 years of inventing new models and methods and improving climate models, I couldn’t take it anymore. A kind of mass apathy, the opposite of mass panic, had spread in the scientific community.
