Fangen wir mit dem Positiven an: Warum trotz der Bedrohungen durch die Klimakrise Hoffnung besteht, ist im Guardian nachzulesen. Und die Transformationsexpertin Maja Göpel erklärt, woraus sie in der aktuellen Lage ihre Energie und Zuversicht schöpft.
Nun zum Unerfreulichen dieser Woche, zuerst zu den Auswirkungen: In Europa sind diesen Sommer über 24'000 Menschen an extremer Hitze gestorben. Laut einer Attributionsstudie sind zwei Drittel davon, das heisst 16'000 Hitzetote, durch die menschengemachte Klimaerwärmung verursacht worden. Zudem dürften Hitze und Überschwemmungen diesen Sommer zu Gebäudeschäden, Ernteverlusten und Produktivitätsausfällen im Wert von über 40 Milliarden Euro führen. Wer sich fragt, ob die Erde «am Kipppunkt» steht, findet im gleichnamigen Buch der Klimajournalisten Benjamin von Brackel und Toralf Staud Antworten.
Ursachen: Die Internationale Energieagentur macht klar, dass keine neuen Erdöl- und Erdgasfelder erschlossen werden dürfen, wenn das 1,5-Grad-Ziel erreicht werden soll. Tatsächlich investiert die Industrie aber mehr. Und setzen die NATO-Staaten ihre Aufrüstungspläne um, führt das zu einem markanten Anstieg der Treibhausgasemissionen.
Klimapolitik: Nicht nur die USA verweigern sich dem Kampf gegen die Klimakrise, auch zahlreiche Industriestaaten schwächen ergriffene Massnahmen ab. Entsprechend düster fällt die Bilanz zehn Jahre nach dem Pariser Klimaabkommen aus. Die Kritik trifft leider auch auf die Schweiz zu: Der Bundesrat will die Klimapolitik nicht verschärfen und nimmt damit in Kauf, dass die Klimaziele verfehlt werden.
